Dental Veneers Frederick, MD
After years of use and abuse, sometimes your teeth need a little bit of a pick-me-up. Your teeth do a lot for you, from showing off your smile to chewing your food – they definitely earn their keep. So after they are beaten up and showing signs of wear and tear don’t they deserve a chance to shine for you once again? This is exactly what porcelain veneers can do for your worn out smile!
What are veneers?Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain crafted to fit over the front of your teeth. Before application they look a bit like eggshells that are made to wrap around the front and side portions of your teeth. They have the uncanny ability to breathe new life into your smile.
Veneers can be used to straighten otherwise crooked looking teeth. They can close large gaps between teeth and give room to teeth that are too close together. They can whiten teeth that appear dark and fix virtually any discoloration issue your teeth may have.
Porcelain Veneer ProcedureIt will require two visits to our office to receive porcelain veneers. During the first visit we will take impressions (molds) of the teeth you wish to have veneers placed on. We will send this mold to a laboratory that will fabricate the veneers using a state of the art technology.
During the first visit we will also buff and lightly shape your teeth so they are ready to receive the veneers. A small portion of your teeth must be removed to ensure the veneers have a natural look to them. During this visit you will also be asked to choose the shade that you wish your new veneers to be. We can make them as light or dark as you wish!
Once we receive the veneers from the laboratory it will be time for the second visit. During the second visit we will do one final prep of your teeth to ensure successful veneer application. We want them to last a long time so we make certain to take special care when preparing your teeth to receive them.
Once your teeth are ready to receive the veneers we apply a special, long lasting bonding cement to the teeth. Immediately following the bonding cement, we apply the veneers and use a special light to harden the cement. We then make any necessary adjustments to ensure a natural look.
Taking Care of Your VeneersThe best way to ensure long life of your veneers is the same way you ensure the long life of your teeth – good dental habits. Brushing twice daily and flossing at least once a day is critical to maintaining your veneers.
Proper brushing technique should be followed. We recommend using soft bristled brushes and brushing with small, light strokes. Brushing too hard can scratch both the veneers and the enamel on your teeth.
You can expect your veneers to last anywhere from ten to twenty years with proper care. It is important to note that we do not recommend chewing on hard things (like ice) or using your teeth to open bags or packages as this can chip veneers.
