Dental Crown Frederick, MD
When a tooth has been significantly damaged, either by decay or trauma, sometimes the only way to save it is by having a crown placed. A dental crown is a restorative dental appliance that fits over and performs all the same functions as your natural tooth. Crowns offer a great option to tooth loss / replacement and have the ability to last many years.
Crowns Restore Damaged TeethDental crowns give our patients an option to keep the vast majority of their natural tooth while being able to protect and restore function to them if they are damaged or weak. Specifically, a dental crown will often be used for the followings:
|•||To protect a tooth with too many cracks|
|•||To protect a tooth with a substantial crack or cracks|
|•||If a tooth has been weakened by too many fillings or cavities|
|•||To restore a tooth after a root canal|
|•||To cap a dental implant|
|•||As support for a replacement tooth in a dental bridge|
There are other restorative procedures that can be used in place of a crown depending on the circumstances. In many, less extreme scenarios we can use things like onlays, inlays, and fillings to restore damaged, decayed, or weakened teeth to their previous luster. At Colliver Dental, our team of highly trained professionals are well versed in the art of biomimetic dentistry, and can give your teeth the aesthetic you want at a price that can’t be beat.
Types of CrownsThere are three basic kinds of crowns that we offer at Colliver Dental - porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and gold.
Porcelain CrownsPorcelain crowns are by far the most aesthetically pleasing option. They mimic the look of a tooth almost perfectly and therefore are most commonly used on front teeth. They tend to be brittle compared to the other options and so they aren’t as good of a fit for teeth that are farther back in the mouth.
Porcelain Fused to Metal CrownsPFM crowns offer a great solution to those who are looking for the realistic appearance of porcelain on a tooth that requires a stronger structure. PFM’s consist of a metal crown that has a thin coating of porcelain baked onto the outside. They are the perfect fusion of strength and beauty and are great for restorations of molars and pre-molars.
Gold CrownsGold is one of the best materials to use in tooth restorations several reasons. Gold feels almost exactly like your natural teeth and offers the same density and strength. Many people enjoy the appearance of gold but some prefer that they not be used in front teeth to avoid a clashing aesthetic. Despite popular belief, gold crowns are not made purely of gold – rather, they are a mix of gold, copper, tin, silver, and a few other metals.
